Artist Profile – Suzanne Way, Painter

What’s your background?

I am a self-taught artist currently working in acrylic on two main mediums – canvas and driftwood.

I have been painting for approximately 10 years.  However, since moving to Muriwai 4 years ago with my family, I have taken painting more seriously.  I joined the Muriwai Arts Collective (MAOS), and found this to be a hugely positive move forward, prompting me to exhibit my work and be involved in lasts years ‘Open Studio’ art trail. Some pretty big steps which I might add, were slightly terrifying at the time, but hugely rewarding and successful!!

Why do you do what you do?

Painting not only provides me with a creative outlet, but it also does so much more.  It stills me - my mind and body.  It relaxes me and provides me with a form of comfort and delight.  It renews me, heals me and at the same time challenges me. I am reminded of this quote and believe it to be true for me, “Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life” - Pablo Picasso.

I might add, I am also hugely passionate about ceramics and have dabbled a wee bit in hand building thanks to the guidance and support from Lily Weed – a local ceramic artist. I appreciate the tactile nature of clay, three-dimensional aspect and practicality. Working between the two mediums i.e painting and clay, I find is a great balance!

What inspires your work?

Nature is differently my biggest catalyst for finding a subject and living in Muriwai, I am continually captivated by my surroundings and it is from this, that I draw my inspiration.

How do I work?

I work often off photos that resonate with me. I am often interested in incorporating detailed aspects of my subject, which requires attention to detail/observational skills.

What’s next?

I look forward to 2020 being a fun-filled creative year.  I will continue on the path with ‘Muriwai Arts Open Studios’ and look forward to seeing where the creative journey will take me next!
